Les Phares de France sont une partie encore trop méconnue de notre patrimoine national.
Sait-on, par exemple que Cordouan, universellement reconnu comme le plus beau phare du monde, a été le premier édifice classé monument historique comme Notre-Dame de Paris?
Sait-on que les constructions d'Armen ou de La Jument, entre autres, représentent de prodigieux exploits techniques considérés en leur temps comme de véritables victoires sur l'impossible?
Mais l'histoire des phares n'est pas seulement celle d'ingénieurs et d'architectes de génie; elle est aussi celle de leurs gardiens, héros solitaires et obscurs d'une véritable épopée, qui même au coeur des pires tempêtes ou des guerres les plus meurtrières ont, chaque soir, allumé leur feu salvateur.

Another little known fact is that at the time (the beginning of the century) , the building of lighthouses like Armen or La Jument, were considered extraordinary technical feats, important victories over the impossible.
But the history of lighthouses is not only that of brilliant engineers and architects; it is also that of the keepers, solitary, unsung heroes of epic adventures, who in the midst of the worst storms, or the deadliest wars, have faithfully lit, every night, the lifesaving fire.
For "the honor of our duty"...
